It's basically like a regular middle/high school with accelerated courses and a lot more work. It's not as bad as it sounds and most of the people at Darnell are very accepting. I've never seen any bullying but I have seen a few fights. It's a nice school but it's in a bad area. It's also very diverse. However, there are A LOT of bomb threats and it gets quite annoying. A lot of privileges have been taken away due to these bomb threats. There are a lot of great teachers as well as a few bad ones. Personally, I think the high school is better than the middle school.
Well, we do have a rare chance of fights, and we do have a monthly basis of bomb threats in this school. I don't recommend the middle school personally, but some of the teachers there are pretty chill. It's just the few teachers that are so prejudice and unfair. Don't think that the school will be a euphoric experience, because (and this is for those who came from private schools originally) everything is disordered. The security aren't that serious, threatening but not serious, and the school sells snacks probably just because they don't have a good budget. But I can tell you that the experience felt important for a person's life. We all expect change to happen at one point in life, and we experience it and we just don't like it. Your child is going to have a great MS experience if they don't cause any major drama and dilemma that could be deliterious to others' education. And make sure that your child is disciplined enough to go to that school (serious recommendation), because the kids in this school aren't that disciplined. Anyway, I hope this review helps anyone who wants to know what the actual school experience for a student is like.
Thanks for the wonderful experience, Darnell Cookman!
The school itself is pretty ok, but the teachers and grade system as well as the academic expectations are too high and too difficult to work with. The school's got great potential if they just ease up on students a bit. Also, bomb threats. Lots of em. Be prepared for lots of evacuating.
I attended this school in 6th grade, and I gotta say, it definitely changed my life for the worst. Before I went into this hell hole, I was actually somewhat of a normal person. Many years have past, I likely have some sort of mental illness, I have recently been contemplating suicide, I can't hold a normal conversation with anyone, and I pretty much feel no positive emotions. If I could relive my life during that time, I would not have gone here.
Honestly, most of the reviews of the school are negative. I am a student planning to stay at this school through high school. The school may not be perfect, but atleast it provides a rigorous magnet program. It's as good as JWJ, Landon, and Stanton. If you feel like you are getting left behind, then you should take advantage of the tutoring that teachers offer (free). They are here to help you succeed, that is if you want to. If you want help, just ask. I used to have a bad grade in math, but I was able to take advantage of the tutoring and spent more time in the online text studying for a test the next day. At this point, our middle school stands in the top 5 best middle schools in the district, and our high school is #2 in the district, 21st in FL, in the top 300 in the country, 22nd most challenging in the US and 51st in magnet schools across the US as rated by the Washington Post and US News' school ratings. Our AP passing rates indicate we are the 2nd best AP school in Duval county. So if you are going to say something bad about this school, atleast have a good reason other than the issue of bomb threats and failing grades (which is probably your own fault). And if you don't want to be here, then just leave. No one is stopping you from transferring schools. It's not my problem. (And this goes out to the people doing the bomb threats, just stop. Enough is enough.) As for the bomb threats, every delinquent who has issued a threat, they have been found and punished to the fullest extent of the law for each and every threat that the school has recieved. Mind you that you will be interrogated by JSO and they will figure out if you committed the action. It's criminal law and it's punishable. JUST DON'T DO IT.
